Our Panelists

 

Mark Hsu, Environmental Engineer, F.E:. As a member of LA Sanitation and Environment’s LA Industry team, Mark works on programs aimed at providing businesses and communities in LA the tools to become more sustainable. These programs include Circular Economy – increasing landfill diversion rates, Sector Champions – sector-specific teams with a tailored plan of maintaining public and private relationships, and Business Symposia – working in partnership with businesses to promote sustainable practices benefiting the environment, economy, and community regardless of socioeconomic status.

 

Kelly Schmandt Ferguson, Director of Sustainable City Solutions. Kelly is LACI’s Director of Pilots leading ideation, conceptualization, stakeholder engagement for transformational cleantech pilots.  Kelly has also played pivotal roles in LACI's Market Transformation department as a member of the energy program and leading the first California Climate Cup startup competition held at the Global Climate Action Summit in 2018.

Prior to LACI, Kelly led the Environmental Department for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians working in all facets of environmental issues including renewable energy, climate adaptation, emergency management, habitat mitigation, water quality, waste management, and workforce development.

 

Stephanie Pincetl, Director California Center for Sustainable Communities. Dr. Pincetl conducts research on environmental policies and governance and analyzes how institutional rules construct how natural resources and energy are used to support human activities and create Earth Systems impacts.  Her focus is on social and environmental justice and the need to develop equitable strategies to reduce human impacts on the planet.  She is expert in bringing together interdisciplinary teams of researchers across the biophysical and engineering sciences with the social sciences to address problems of complex urban systems and environmental management.

 

Elena Guevara, Policy Analyst for LA Mayor's Office. Elena is a policy analyst with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Office of Sustainability. She coordinates the Office’s efforts to deliver annual progress reports on the Sustainable City pLAn and provides programmatic support in delivering pLAn initiatives related to climate mitigation. Elena joined the Mayor’s Office in October 2016 as an Americorps Climate Action Fellow and holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in Economics and Global Studies.
